By the order of then Greek ruler Ptolemy V the Rosetta Stone was written by the high priests of ancient Egypt praising the good deedsof the Pharaohs carved ca 196 BC in Egyptian and Greek. Actually it is scripted in Hieroglyphic, the official language of high priests and important government officials. Demotic, the language of the commoners, and Greek because at that period Egypt was ruled by the Greeks. This stone was found in 1799 by the French soldiers ar Fort St. Julien, in the city of El-Rashid "Rosetta" and so named. Jean-Francois Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphics around 1822. It is exhibited at the British Museum.
